Most flannel shirts have a short life cycle. They feel good in the store, look fine on the first wear, and then slowly become the shirt you reach for only when everything else is in the wash. That is usually a fit problem, sometimes a weight problem, and occasionally a color problem all at once. We’ve been looking specifically for flannel that sits well untucked without looking sloppy, tucks in cleanly when you want it to, and holds its structure after repeated washing. The brushed surface should feel substantial without being stiff. The plaids we’ve gravitated toward are the ones that read as intentional rather than inherited. These work over a white tee on a Saturday, under a chore coat when the temperature drops, and on their own with a dark denim when you want something that looks considered without any real effort. Flannel done right is one of the most reliable things in a casual wardrobe. These are the ones worth keeping.
